A Definition by the Spirit

By Larry Ray Hafley

Revealed by God and recorded by the Spirit in Acts 2 is an incident of Holy Spirit baptism and speaking in tongues. Manifestly, therefore, we have reliable "testimony" concerning those subjects. The definition of speaking in tongues by men "filled with the Holy Spirit" is lucidly set forth:

1) They spoke "with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." (v. 4)

2) Every man "heard them speak in his own language." (v. 6)

3) Each man heard "in our own tongue, wherein we were born" (v. 8)

4) They said, "We do hear them speak in our tongues" (v. 11), or "language." (v. 6)

Conclusion: To speak in tongues is to speak a language of men as the Spirit gives utterance. Ecstatic jibber-jabber does not fit the Holy Spirit's description of what was done in Acts 2. All modern day "Pentecostal out-pouring recipients" take notice.
