Thy Will Be Changed

By Donald R. Givens

Why is it that people find it difficult and burdensome to welcome and abide by the will of God? It may well be said that there is one fundamental sin from which many other sins evolve, and that "root" sin is the sin of pride. (Mark 7:22) The basic reason why human beings find it so troublesome to accept the will of God is that we so often in our own minds think that we know better than God!

Some really believe that, if they could only get their own way-do as they please-they would then be happy. We are told: "If man could only arrange life and the events of life to suit his own ideas, everything would be all right." That is why multitudes of people would really rather pray: "Thy will be changed". . . rather than, "Thy will be done."

While there is pride and self-will in one's heart he cannot pray this petition, for the simple reason that he does not desire to say it. Whether admitted or not, many people would much prefer their own way, and they believe their own way is far superior to God's revealed way. But learn and never forget: "hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world . . . the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men . . . no flesh should glory before God . . . He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord." (1 Cor. 1:20, 25, 29, 31)
