Gambling Fever

Gambling is parasitic, selfish and greedy. It thrives from the lives of others and is out everything for nothing. Someone said that “gambling chloroforms the soul, freezes the very milk of human kindness, and kills all feeling for the spiritual.” The old French proverb says, “Gambling is the child of avarice, the brother of iniquity, the father of mischief.”

Webster defines gambling: “To play or game for money or other stakes; to hazard; wager.” Involved in this definition are action and value; rivalry with another person or persons; possibility of loss and uncontrolled event. Paraphrasing, we could say that gambling is “a participation or engagement by two or more persons in a contest or game wherein they risk their money on value.” Thus, it involves one person trying to get what another person possesses by chance.

Condemnation of Gambling (Phil. 4:8).

Though the Bible does not come right out and specify gambling as a work of the flesh, there principles set forth in the Scriptures that gambling violates. Someone who has the gambling fever might say, enough to show anyone “Show me where the Bible condemns gambling! The word is not even in the Bible.” But, does this make gambling right because the word is not mentioned? Certainly not! Suicide, embezzling, bootlegging, racketeering, etc. do not occur in the Bible, but they are wrong and sinful, nevertheless. So, it is also true with gambling. Though the word is not in the Bible, there are Scriptures that condemn it.

Paul wrote, “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth” (Eph. 4:28). God intends for man to make a living by working for it. Those who gamble try to get something for nothing without giving service or exchange for goods. When man fell and was cast out of Eden, God said, “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread. . . (Gen. 3:19).

Again, we read, “Love worketh no ill to his neighbor. . . ” (Rom. 13: 10). Could one practice this Scripture and at the same time be making plans to acquire his neighbor’s weekly paycheck? We are to love our neighbor as ourselves and do nothing to him that we would not want done unto ourselves. Taking a man’s money is not a very neighborly act.

“Thou shalt not covet” (Rom. 13:9) is another passage against gambling. Covetousness is eagerness to have more, especially that which belongs to another. Thayer says covetousness (epithumia) means, “desire for what is forbidden” (p. 238). He also sates concerning pleoniexia, translated covetousness, “greedy, desire to have more” (p. 516). Every form of gambling is promoted by greed and lust to get that which belongs to somebody else. Covetousness is the root of it. The end result is that the covetous shall not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:10).

Paul wrote to the Philippian brethren, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true . . . honest . . . pure . . . lovely . . . good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Phil. 4:8). Gambling is contrary to each one of these things. Furthermore, a gambler cannot glorify God in such activity. Paul said, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31).

These preceding Scriptures are more than enough to show anyone who is honest and sincere that gambling is worldly and sinful in nature. It should be abhorred, despised and rejected.

Methods of Gambling

There are scores of ways to gamble. People can gamble on almost anything. One of the biggest gambling rackets is horse racing. People do not go day after day to the races just to see the horses run. They go to gamble. Take away the gambling and horse racing would cease. Billions of dollars are “poured down the drain” annually to play the horses. Think what this money would do in feeding the poor, or helping unemployment. Dog racing has also become quite popular. People are literally going to the dogs.

Card playing is another way by which many gamble. This sort of gambling is running rampant in every town. You can find it in the back of the pool hall, in the privacy of the clubs, the casinos, or in the living room of the home. It may be called “bridge,” or “poker,” and maybe only a vase, ornament or a few dollars are involved, but whether the value is little or big, it is still gambling. Perhaps we would be safe in saying that nine-tenths of gamblers are taught in their homes by their mothers and fathers in a bridge game or poker game, or maybe the lottery that everybody has gone “crazy” over. How could children grow up to have any scruples against wagering when the parents have set such unworthy examples before them.

Other forms of gambling are such things as wagering on dice, bingo (you are starting to meddle right here, preacher), slot machines, punch boards, matching coins, pitching pennies at a line, buying chances on a new car, boat, etc. Christians have no business participating in any of these. They are gambling. “But much of it is such a small amount. How could anything like that be wrong?” somebody says. For the same reason that it is just as wrong to steal a little money as it is to steal a lot. Stealing is stealing regardless of the amount and gambling is gambling regardless of the stakes.

Consequences of Gambling

Along with gambling go, many times, crime, murder, drunkenness, broken homes, stealing, robbery, loss of position and reputation, and other evils.

How many have killed as a result of a card game? How many have stolen in order to pay back their gambling debt? How many broken homes have come about because a father began gambling and could not provide for his own because his week’s pay was wasted in a poker game or on a horse race? How many lives have been ruined because the “gambling fever” was not thwarted?

Gambling is just another deceptive sin that Satan uses to entice the souls of men and women into his own will. There is no good in it. It is filled with disappointment, heartache and sorrow. Its way is down and not up.

In conclusion, I quote the words of Solomon: “Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich. Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor” (Prov. 28:6-8).

Theron N. And Lennis Bohannan Honored

When a person has spent many years serving the cause of righteousness, it may be truly said, “A gray head is a crown of glory” (Prov. 16:31; 20:29). Our culture is so youth oriented that we may fail to honor those who have gone before us, aided us in our labors, and helped to prepare many of the opportunities for good which we have today. G.W. Riggs (1867-1952) rendered invaluable service to the cause of Christ by preaching the gospel in California during the early 1900s. His work was made possible largely through the gracious support of Michael Sanders, a successful businessman and a zealous Christian (Gospel Guardian, I May 1952, pp. 2,5). George Pepperdine (1866-1962) also gave large sums of money to aid the cause of truth in the same state. Another such businessman who has encouraged the cause of Christ in California and elsewhere for many years is Theron N. Bohannan, with his faithful wife Lennis. Their love for the gospel, their efforts to spread it, and their sacrifices in the support of its friends bless the world beyond the value of dollars and cents.

“Brother Bo,” as he is affectionately known to his friends, came from a family which served the Lord. His parents, Thomas Filmore and Clara (Powell) Bohannan, were active Christians who instilled the gospel in their son’s heart. Also, in the Bohannan lineage, there is a long history of interest in gospel preaching and teaching through the printed page. Theron’s father had two brothers who preached and wrote. James L. Neal published a journal called The Gospel Age for a number of years from Springdale, Arkansas. Its pages included articles from Theron’s father and uncles, and even a cousin named Ray. The most active writer was Theron’s uncle, Walter Nelson, who gave his middle name to Theron. By printer’s errors, both the father’s initials T.F. and the son’s T.N. appeared in The Gospel Age as T.H. Bohannan at times. The who le issue for I September 1954 contains articles and reports by W.N. and Ray.

The Bohannan family read the Bible Banner (1938-49) as published by Foy E. Wallace, Jr. and Roy E. Cogdfll and the Bohannan name occasionally graced the pages of the Banner’s successor, the Gospel Guardian (see articles by W.N., 15 Dec. 1949, p. 6; Oct. 1950, p. 11; and 24 July 1952, p. 3; by T.F., 28 Jan. 1954, p. 12, and 27 June 1963, p. 2). Theron had the highest regard for the good accomplished by the Gospel Guardian in the 1950s during the dark days of the rise of institutionalism among the churches. He was so disappointed with the softness and error on grace and unity which marred the journal during the late 1960s and early 70s that he joined with 16 other purchasers to buy the paper in 1974. A new editor was chosen and the paper greatly improved. In May of 1975 Theron bought out the other owners and continued to chart the Guardian’s course by the standard of divine truth. His longtime friend James W. Adams became editor and Cogdill an associate editor. As these three men promised in the issue of 15 September 1975, the Guardian once again rang with the certain sound of truth. But after rive years of this labor of love, the burdens on all three men had become so great that the Gospel Guardian and Truth Magazine merged to become the Guardian of Truth with the 1 January 1981 issue.

For many years, brother Bo has served with distinction on the board of the Cogdill Foundation which became the Guardian of Truth Foundation. Not only has Theron aided the board by giving of his time, money, and counsel, but also he and his wife have been ambassadors of good will by distributing literature and informing brethren of the services of our journal and bookstore during their extensive travels around the country, especially in the northwest. By the unanimous decision of the board during its meeting 2-3 December 198 1, the efforts of Theron and Lennis were given special notice through a letter and a plaque expressing the board’s appreciation (pictured in Aug. 1982 Guardian of Truth, p. 472).

Now we mark another milestone. Years of toil, sacrifice, and trouble took their toll, causing brother Cogdill to resign from the board in 1980. Similarly, brother Bohannan submitted his resignation to the 28 January 1986 board meeting, adding,

My brethren and past co-workers in teaching the truths of God via the printed page, we shall continue to remember you in our prayers and covet your prayers as the clock of time runs on and on till the sun of our lives sets.

I just don’t know how to say GOOD-BYE to all of you so we shall just say, “SO LONG, FOR NOW.”

The board responded by unanimously expressing its great appreciation for his years of service and for everything he has done in helping this Foundation to go forward in its work of providing gospel literature. “We regret the toll taken by his many years of toil and sacrifice, and unite in the prayer that his health Will improve so that he will have many more active years in the cause of Christ.” A beautiful plaque has been presented to brother and sister Bohannan with the following inscription:

Too often we are unaware of our debt to brethren who have helped us in the cause of truth behind the scenes – people like the Michael Sanders, the J.W. Akins (1873-1960 ., who established the Akin Fund to help struggling preachers), the Theron Bohannans, and others like them. Being in the public eye, preachers and elders are often recognized and commended (or criticized and condemned). But many of the accomplishments of preachers and other brethren, along with many of the tools used in their labors, are made possible by the financial and other contributions of generous brethren like the Bohannans. Publishing religious journals, books, tracts, and class materials is extremely expensive. Error never wants for money, propagators, and followers, but brethren teaching the truth always seem to struggle against tremendous odds. It has ever been so, but God raises up people who are willing to spend and be spent in the support of truth, financially and in other ways. A conservative estimate of the money the Bohannans have put into publishing gospel literature which they deemed important -including the Gospel Guardian, Truth Magazine, Guardian of Truth, the “Truth In Life” classroom materials, and the preparation of a biography of Roy Cogdill – would be easily $150,000.00! Keep in mind that this takes no account of what they have used in helping churches, supporting preachers, or aiding other worthy endeavors through the years.

Very often we wait until some beloved laborer is gone and then say with regret, “I wish I had taken the time to thank him or her for. . . . ” Dear reader, if you have benefitted from reading the Gospel Guardian, Truth Magazine, and the Guardian of Truth, if you or your children have studied the “Truth In Life” material, if you look forward to seeing the Cogdill biography, why not take a moment to write a note of appreciation to the Bohannans for their help behind the scenes through the years. The Bohannans knew nothing about the preparation of this article. All of us associated with the Guardian of Truth hope that our tribute will help them to know how much we love and appreciate them for all the good they have done and are doing. May God bless you both with many more years!

A Fool Despises Instruction

Learning only occurs when there has been a transfer of knowledge from the teacher to the one who is taught. This transfer of knowledge is sometimes stifled by traits of the teacher. His teaching can be impaired by speaking in a monotone, teaching too long at a time, boring presentation, or discussing topics of no relevance.

However, sometimes the process of learning is impaired by the hearer. Jesus, the perfect Teacher, was unable to teach some people. He warned that men should be careful to hear. He said, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” (Lk. 8:8). Each of the letters to the seven churches of Asia concludes with the saying, “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches” (Rev. 2:7,11,17,29; 3:6,13,22). In order to benefit from the revelation which God has given to man, an individual must have the proper attitude to learn.

The Attitude Toward Instruction

An individual must have a burning desire to know God’s will. The wise man said, “Buy the truth, and sell it not” (Prov. 23:23). This proverb recognizes the preciousness of truth, the willingness to sacrifice in order to obtain it, and the obligation to cling to it at all costs. Jesus taught the same lesson in comparing the kingdom of heaven to a treasure hidden in a field and to a goodly pearl (Matt. 13:44-46). The man who accidentally discovered the hidden treasure and the man who found the goodly pearl for which he had been searching sold all that they had in order to obtain it. The Bereans displayed this attitude toward learning God’s will when they “searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).

A wise man is marked by this attitude toward learning the will of God. He will listen to instruction.

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning (Prov. 9:9).

The wise in heart will receive commandments . . . (Prov. 10:8).

The instruction which they hear, they will keep (i.e. obey, make application to their lives – Prov. 10:17). Having this attitude toward learning makes them increase in wisdom (Prov. 12:1; 15:31; 19:20). They will love the man who reproves them for their sin (Prov. 9:8). This disposition perceives that anytime a man has the opportunity to rid himself of some incorrect belief or practice in “change for a correct belief or practice, he is wise to exchange the bad for the good.

By contrast, the fool hates reproof.

. . . he that hateth reproof is brutish (Prov. 12:1).

. . . a scorner heareth not rebuke (Prov. 13:1).

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regarded reproof shall be honored (Prov. 13:18).

Frequently, he will hate the one who brings it. Paul asked the Galatians if he had become their enemy because he told them the truth (Gal. 4:16). “A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him” (Prov. 15:12).

Do Not Waste Your Time Teaching One Who Hates Instruction

What should be our attitude toward an individual who refuses to learn? Should we continue trying to teach him?

The scornful man has hardened his face against the truth (Prov. 21:29). The wise man said, “Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words” (Prov. 23:9). Not only will he harden his face against the truth, he will maliciously attack the one teaching it.

He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee (Prov. 9:8-9).

Jesus indicated the same thing when He taught that one should not cast his pearls before swine “lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you” (Matt. 7:6). The early apostles learned this lesson well enough to shake the dust off their feet when one refused God’s word (Acts 13:45-46; 18:6). A scornful man should be left alone in his sin (Matt. 15:14).

Learn By Instruction Or By Stripes

The man who rebels against God’s divine word will suffer the consequences of his action. Under the theocratic government in Israel, a scornful man was punished, sometimes by a beating (Deut. 25:1-3). Civil punishment would teach a man what he was too foolish to learn by instruction.

. . . a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding (Prov. 10:13).

Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools (Prov. 19:29).

Yet a fool will learn less from his punishment than the wise will learn from instruction (Prov. 17:10).

Sometimes a person will rebel against God’s law and civil law to the point that he is put in prison. Prison is for the man who cannot learn any other way. Yet, in prison, some men learn only how to be better criminals. Such a man is a fool.

To punish these individuals is necessary, not only that justice might be served, but that others will learn not to conduct themselves in the same way. “When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge” (Prov. 21:11; cf. I Tim. 5:20).

Continued Rebellion Leads To Destruction

The person who continues to rebel against God’s word will eventually destroy himself. “Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed. . . ” (Prov. 13:13; cf. 19:16). God’s law of retribution is this: “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Gal. 6:7). And the harvest is always greater than the seed that is sown (cf. Hos. 8:7).

Most of us have seen how this rebellion destroys lives. I remember a young lady who was especially skilled in her trade. She turned to drugs and drinking, destroyed her mind, and eventually committed suicide. Young executives sometimes trample underfoot their subordinates until they are fired. The man who obstinately refuses to heed the word of God will suffer the consequences of his actions, both in this life and in that which is to come.

The Bible Calls This Man A Fool

Because of the foolishness of this action, the Bible calls the man who refuses to listen to instruction a fool (Prov. 15:5). Even as the man who says there is no God (Psa. 14:1) and the man who knows God will but does not obey it are fools (Matt. 7:24-27), so also is the man who refuses to listen to instruction and correction.

Conclusion

What is your attitude when someone corrects you? Do you swell up with anger? Do you lash back with attacks against the one correcting you (some store up a list of grievances for use at a time like this)? Do you cease associating with the one correcting you? Or, do you listen attentively, weigh the criticism objectively, and act accordingly?

The young person needs to learn to profit from criticism. Parents help mold their children into scornful fools when they allow the character to develop in a manner that correction is not well received. Pouting, anger, and retaliation are sinful responses to correction.

Few things test one’s character more than how he reacts to criticism. What would be your reaction should someone say, “You are doing this wrong; I will show you a better way”? Suppose someone tried to show you that something you believed about salvation and God was wrong. Could you listen, weigh the evidence, and make an objective judgment? Are you a foolish man or a wise man?

The People In The Pew

For several years I have had considerable contact with brother Charles Holt. Although we attended neighboring congregations, this association has been more of a social nature rather than religious. During some of the darker periods of my life brother Holt was “there for me.” His influence and encouragement is due a great deal of credit for helping me get turned around, both physically and spiritually. I shall always be grateful for his attention.

Like so many of our brethren, I had often wondered if brother Holt still espoused many of his old concepts in regard to the eldership, etc. So, in 1982, in all sincerity, I requested a discussion with him on a one-on-one basis (Matt. 18). Brother Holt’s answer consisted largely of a tirade, asking who was I to be calling him in question. Needless to say I was hurt and confused. Obviously, he considered me to be beneath his knowledge and position, and to grant me an audience would be a waste of time. However, it was perfectly clear that he still clung to his old ideas.

Within the past several months, I have been privileged to attend both debates between brother Holt and brother J.T. Smith. The first of these was in Lake Jackson, Texas and the second here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In both of these brother Smith often chided brother Holt for failure to approach the issues as raised by the debate. (See Truth [April, 1986 issue] “News and Notes” by brother Elmer Moore.) Instead of complying, brother Holt repeatedly stated that his intent was to preach to the people in the pew.

Now this seemed to be a rather curious attitude for a brother who has agreed to debate certain specific differences of opinion. What about the audience? Some of us had come from afar, and at considerable expense, to hear these advertised issues discussed. Do you suppose they could have been short changed? At any rate, brother Holt did, in his very capable ability, deliver several elegant and emotional discourses, directed, as he says, to the people in the pew. It seemed to make no difference that they bore little relationship to the questions at hand.

Just who are these people in the pew? One could suppose that they are a cross section of Christians like you would find in most any local congregation. Sprinkled in among them would be elders, deacons, preachers, etc. These all occupy a seat in the pew. (It has been at least two generations since I have seen these elders etc. sitting down front in those old over-stuffed chairs. They now sit in the pew.) At any rate, brother Holt seems to have no trouble recognizing the average Christian. But his opinion of them has deteriorated greatly. Listen to what he has to say about them:

But even worse in my view, is the fact that “the people in the pews” are so ignorant of God’s word, so fearful and intimidated that they are in such slavery to men and an unscriptural corporate structure that they accept and bow to such treatment as this (The Examiner, 1:2, p. 15).

These average Christians who sit in the pews are viewed by Holt as ignorant, fearful, and intimidated. As such they should be fair game for most any precept that could be made plausible to them. Right? Is it possible that brother Holt hopes to build a following among a group like this? Does this pattern sound familiar? It ought to. Paul cautioned the Ephesian elders about it some 2000 years ago (Acts 20:29,30). No wonder he is trying to reach the people in the pew. And he is not the least bit subtle about it. He openly proclaims this to be his intention.

Now you would think that the admonition to the pew people to bolt from the shackles of congregational authority, would catch on. After all this is the age of “do your own thing” and E.R.A. (Holt issues a special appeal to Christian women to speak out and stand up for their rights.) So, where is the problem? After some 20 years, give or take a few, why are so few people willing to accept this concept? It is true that a small handful had adopted the idea, but then most any radical can get somebody to follow him, no matter how far out in “left field” he may be.

But the real reason these poor ignorant, intimidated, and superstitious people in the pew are not buying these ideas is that they have been “programmed” to investigate them in light of God’s word (Acts 17:11). They have been taught to ignore sensationalism and emotionalism and to stand on the Bible and the Bible alone. They have always been proud of this principle and have used it successfully down through the years to withstand error. So if brother Holt and his followers would cease these trite tactics and get down to the business of “chapter and verse” perhaps they could reach more people. On the other hand the results might turn out surprisingly different. The people in the pew might be able to reach them.
